Absolutely wild thinking about travel before planes. Like you just disappear from the planet for several months while you're going to australia or whatever. I already worry about people thinking I'm dead when I go camping for a week.

Does the plan 9 posting script work?

Game developers who don't give you a way of skipping
every cutscene should go straight to jail. I have an unplayable copy of Infamous 2 because it can't get past the intro cutscene.

Hollywood is too afraid to make movies gay nowadays. Lethal Weapon ends with a 10 minute long mud wrestling session between Gary Busey and a shirtless Mel Gibson and it should've stayed that way.

I'm not gonna lie the new Sarah Maclaughlan(sp?) song is pretty chill honestly.

I wonder how helpful it'd be to make a fan which specifically helps breezes. Like it has a vane on the outside of the stream and adjusts its direction to match the prevailing breeze at the moment.

This unmarked veggie bacon I got at the asian market is pretty good. There are a few secrets to fixing up veggie bacon every time though: salt and msg (it always suffers from trying to be healthy,) smoked paprika for a bit of extra smoke, and then I always butter the bread to make up for the lack of fat.

Sweet! With the nfs mount I can post to ube from the dreamcast.

Heat survived! Plus the trash strike is over now. Only big concern is all the fillings I need.

The width of weather is really bizarre to me. I moved hundreds of miles north and a lot of the time storms and stuff will be hitting back in NC and also here. I know I've seen it on weather tv channels and stuff, but it's weird to live it.
2025-06-25 08:44:27
My theory that NPC theory is real but specifically only applies to people while they drive cars still holds.
2025-06-25 08:43:56
You know, most of the people around here are really nice but sometimes you get high class assholes. Today's winner: honking at a school bus on a stop for blocking the one way street you can just turn out of.

Finally got my driver's license changed over today. Tacked on an extra hour maybe because I didn't have my passport. I don't get
why I need a passport anyway, surely your photo ID is proof of identity. It's not even a REALID push thing, they specifically require your passport or birth certificate.

The heat is getting bad but I'm hoping my opinion's gonna hold up when it
really hits that nothing's as bad as Tokyo in August.

Today in clownshoes news: neither dnf nor yum seem capable of running in a 'mere' 512MiB of RAM.

Someone decided to just dump all their trash in my recycling bin after it was picked up today. Classy

Honestly blows my mind as a (being polite) thinkpad enthusiast that they're
still making keyboards compatible with the T420. This one's kinda shitty (I've found that the knockoffs seem to get worse over time?) but it is in fact a new thinkpad keyboard manufactured, according to the code on the part, 2 months ago in China. Wild.

The web developer experience with kcgi and thttpd is remarkably good, actually. Like I don't mind this workflow at all for this side project. This might be a real thing.
2025-06-11 22:12:56
I'm honestly kinda fucking with netbsd. I mostly installed it on the T41 for OCC purposes but this isn't half bad. I didn't have a very good reason for leaving openbsd beyond "sometimes I had to boot into linux and I never *had* to boot into openbsd" but maybe I'll give net a shot as a main some time.

The shipping here is insane, it's so weird. I wasn't exactly in an urban area before so ordering stuff and getting it shipped to me the day after (or sometimes even the day of) just kinda feels like magic.

I'm finally actually getting something of a home office set up, only took 6 years of full time wfh. To be fair to myself it's only with this move that I can have anything like dedicated office space.
2025-06-08 20:48:26
It's so weird how the convenience store here just sold single servings of tylenol. I guess it kinda makes sense, but I've never seen that be the
only option before, you know?
2025-06-08 14:48:27
Fresh easily accessible pasta is such a fucking game changer bro
2025-06-06 07:58:48
It's already getting so hot it's crazy. Luckily the AC works okay here; normally I wouldn't run AC, but on a partner visit I'm a bit more free with it. After that's done I'll probably just buy a fan and hit myself. Fun heat wave we're in though, if I remember the news right we're like 10F (~4C) higher than average most days this week.

I've been using Microemacs a lot lately as a pretty minimal editor (it highlights matching parens, but that's about it,) so yesterday I took a look at the source and I should probably abandon it ^^' It seemed like a good idea to clear up some of the warnings but in digging into them I'm convinced that the author literally just did not know the semantics of strncpy, which is not a good sign in a text editor.

You ever just think about Wayland?
20+ years of trying and failing to replace X11 and somehow the solution everyone ended up settling on was "Every window manager just independently needs to completely replace X11 in their own codebase."
Yeah I know wlroots exists. Writing against it still sucks compared to xlib.
2025-05-26 15:58:02
On the topic of the rush of projects (I think we're on 3 in as many days now?) something I've been thinking a lot is, I think a Chuck Moore quote about how overrated code reuse is. It does feel true to a certain extent that much of the time it's a waste to write a library, or at the very least a library first, rather than focusing on fixing a problem. I do have one home-made library for my own projects, called logos, but that was factored out after it proved useful in a few independent projects and filled the needs of them with no changes.
2025-05-26 15:44:16
Another project that's long been on the backburner down: sqh (no I don't remember what it's supposed to stand for), an in-tree bug tracker, got written today.
2025-05-25 09:48:32
I was watching a mountain bike video today and thought about weird invisible skills. Like when we would go on hikes my previous SO wouldn't be able to see the trail, even though that wasn't something I had ever really thought of as a skill someone had to develop. It kinda makes sense though, a trail is usually just marked by being a little bit more worn than the rest of the woods around you, maybe a touch less debris.

Since I ended up knocking out 2/3 of my old
ideas I started turning over a build system in my head. It's a lot harder than I imagined when I first wrote the post, I think. In the intervening years I've just settled on flat projects and BSDMake mostly. I'm wondering if the project's conceit of a generic DAG runner and using it as a build system even makes sense.

Hoagies are kinda weird in Philly. Everyone uses the same rolls (Amoroso) and everyone uses the same deli products (Dietz & Watson) so they end up a super cheap commodity, and all of the expression is just in construction. Like despite the same ingredients and the same basic stuff you can still taste the difference between shops, which is neat.

So I have a working microblog nobody can read now. yippee.
