Gopher's an old (but not dead) hypertext protocol. It dates to about the same time as http, but it's very different in its details. Those differences are why I find it interesting. Some of the big ones are a lack of inline styling: you're just hosting files. This page would be (even more) pure text. It's menu-oriented, and it's only one spec on the wire.
